HIP HOT - WHAT IS IT?
Is the term, "hip hot", just a mis-spelling of the term, "hip hop"? No. Hip hot is a term to describe the condition of the engaged hipster, sometimes called a hip-hotster. Hip denotes a stance of detachment from conventional culture, while hot conveys the connection to some form of alternative culture.
Hip-hotsters are keen to avoid the negative aspects of hipsterism which have drawn so much criticism. Hipsters have been called, "the dead end of Western civilization" (Douglas Haddow). Some feel that hipsters are too concerned with the need to project the ironic image, to make the effort to be a truly conscious citizen. Rejection of the mainstream is meaningless if it just results in marching to the drum of a different dictator.
Hip-hotsters wield their irreverence as a weapon to undermine the dysfunctional aspects of society. They risk believing in their vision of progress, and that defines them more than their clothes, or music, or any other cultural artifact they consume.
